Following a controversy over a Washington appointment, complaints are flying again over an appointment to South Korea. The Tsai administration announced the appointment of Doong Sy-chi as South Korean envoy on Jan. 9, only to take down the notice several hours later. Today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it was carrying out a comprehensive reevaluation of all personnel posted to South Korea. Doong holds a PhD in political science from National Taiwan University, specializing in Northeast Asia security and South Korea”s political and economic development. He is the head of the Taiwan Thinktank”s international affairs division, and he is a frequent guest on political talk shows. Many believe that the government”s decision to suspend his appointment was motivated by the recent backlash over Vincent Chao”s posting to Washington.
