The iGeneration has more opportunity than any generation before to understand their world, to engage with their world and to shape their world. In the ten years since 9/11 that world has been changed more by American geeks in dorms than Al Qaeda operatives in caves. The most powerful weapon in the Middle East is now the smartphone.

Diplomacy now faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities, with digital technology unleashing dangerous forces, which are better able to mobilise and terrorise. But it also allows those promoting community and coexistence to work around traditional elites, and to build new alliances. We need new rules to help manage global affairs. Diplomacy matters more than ever in the Digital Century. Bit it is too important to leave to diplomats.
