The title of the talk was “Biotechnology Development and Application for Developing Countries” – Dr. Sharma holds a PhD in plant anatomy and chemistry from Lucknow University. She has very significantly contributed towards the development of biology in India, especially by setting up a number of research institutions.
A former Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology within the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology, she has also served as President and Executive Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Research in Koba, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Sharma is the recipient of several prizes, including the Norman E. Borlaug Award in Agriculture and the Padma Bhushan from the Indian government. She is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Allahabad and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India.
