In life, we always get into situations where someone else does something to us that we don’t always like. It can involve a person being lectured or sanctioned in a way that they do not like or it can involve someone else saying something perceived to be an insult. The examples are many and cannot all be listed in this article. What is important is that it is easy to feel wronged and thus, a dilemma comes as to whether to ignore the situation or confront the person to talk it out. This article will focus on ignoring the situation and its pros and cons.

There are many types who would rather choose to avoid confrontation and carry on with their lives and that’s all right. These people are the kinds who realize that they may be getting into a battle that they can’t win or they feel that fighting isn’t worth it because of the possible consequences.

Pros

The biggest advantage of ignoring is that you avoid a potentially disastrous situation and it also gives you an opportunity to reflect on what might have happened if you had chosen to confront the person. This can be a good learning experience for the future and that’s always important. If you do confront a situation and then things get out of hand, you could end up losing a friendship, losing your job, or possibly suffer bodily damage depending on how bad things get. Sometimes in life, you have to pick your battles wisely and realize that confrontation is not always the best way to handle a situation.

Cons

The biggest disadvantage is that you may regret having said something or it may bottle up inside of you because you felt you should have done something. This can lead to an internal battle within yourself about whether you should have spoken up. If left unchecked, could cause internal emotional stress which could affect your health in the long run. You might also question your courage and lose your self-esteem when it comes time to confront a situation which involves someone else. It’s not easy to look within yourself and confirm that you made the right decision so be ready for this possibility.
