If The World Was More Like The Olympics: 3 Examples

Nearly every day, especially in this first – year of the administration, of President Donald Trump, we are confronted with actual, and/ or perceived threats, challenges, etc, both, at home, in the United States, as well as internationally. Obviously, the threat of terrorism, whether based on some theology, or emotional issues, is real, and, often, somewhat, scary! Is the rhetoric of Mr. Trump, comforting and unifying, or vitriol – based, adversarial and confrontational? Every two years, either the Summer or Winter Olympics, are held, on a rotating basis, and, at these, international adversaries, come together, to attempt to win medals, based on achievements, without regard to their national strengths, etc! At this year’s events, held in South Korea, for example, North and South Korea, have formed a joint, united team, even though, the leader of North Korea, has often threatened the rest of the area, with devastation, etc. Wouldn’t it be nice, if we could all, come together, in the real world, like at the Olympics, and be able to oppose and compete, in a peaceful manner, rather than the often – vitriolic one, otherwise? Here are 3 compelling aspects, and examples.

1. Competition, but sportsmanship: Rather than threatening others with devastation and annihilation, Olympic competitors seek to do all they can do win, and defeat their competition, but end up, exhibiting sportsmanship, and a highest degree of honor, and caring! If only, world leaders, were ready, willing and able, to pursue the highest degree of national success, etc, wouldn’t this be a safer, more secure, world? What the world needs now, is love!

2. National spirit, plus one – world: While there may be numerous individual needs, goals, and priorities, and a helpful, nationalistic spirit, etc, leaders must recognize, we share one world, and therefore, there must be a spirit of cooperation! One example, is protecting the environment, for the common good, and while many nations have come to understand this, President Trump continues to articulate an America – first philosophy, while denying, climate change science! You couldn’t have an Olympics, if any nation, decided, they were taking their ball home, and going – it, alone!

3. Being the best, versus good – enough: Olympic athletes train, to become the best at their individual sport! They realize, one only wins a medal, if he earns it, by becoming the very best! Far too often, we witness national leaders, focus on personal self – interest, and politics, rather than accepting good – enough!

If the world proceeded, with the true, Olympic spirit and ideals, there would be more, willingness, to agree, to disagree! It’s up to the electorate, to demand this, of leaders!

Why Supporting Allies Should Be A National Priority: 5 Examples

Perhaps, because of the advances in technology, including computers, the Internet, and the necessity of cyber – security, or, perhaps, because of the development, of so many, possible, weapons of mass destruction, etc, there may be, more need, than ever, on strategic alliances, etc, than ever! In today's, often – threatening, disconcerting, times, wouldn't it make sense, if our leader's focused on becoming, even stronger allies, with our historical friends, and those, closest to sharing our common views, regarding freedoms, liberties, etc ? With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly consider, examine, and review, 5 examples, of why this matters, and is significant.

1. G – 7: The recent meeting of the so – called, G – 7, nations, demonstrated some of the challenges, to the pursuit of the concepts of allies, and working together. However, President Donald Trump, and his, Make America Great Again, rhetoric and agenda (#MAGA), goes against the concept of supporting our allies, and working together, for the best interests of the free world! Trump's claim, and often – stated, complaint, of being tired of being taken advantage of, and threatening, as well as imposing tariffs on our historic allies, justifying them, with the rhetoric of national security, certainly does not endear, either the man , or our nation, with their nations. When one begins by stating, he felt strongly, the G-7, should be the G-8, including, Russia, which was expelled, several years ago, because of its behavior, etc, and ends, with accusing the Canadian Prime Minister , of being weak, and a liar, moves us in the direction of near – isolation, rather than honoring alliances, etc.

2. Future needs: Our President withdrew the United States from the Paris Accords, and has clearly demonstrated, either he does care, and / or believe, in the scientific evidence of climate change, and the need for the environmental essentials of clean air, and clean water. Never in recent history, has our Environmental Protection Administration, reduced regulating protecting our air and water quality!

3. Support for Russia, without discussion with allies, etc: For whatever reason, Trump has often appeared to support Russia, often, apparently, to a greater degree than our allies! Since nearly everyone, except him, believe Russia, interfered with our last election, why, would, seeking, to reward them, encourage our allies, and / or most of our citizens?

4. Changing, confusing signals: Other nations are generally discouraged, and concerned, when we change our core message, thus providing changing, confusing signals! At this point in time, when we are witnessing, so many potential threats, etc, does it make sense, we should strive for more, rather than less cooperation, with our historic allies?

5. Tone of rhetoric: While many of the President's core supporters, like, and enjoy, the tone of his rhetoric, etc, this approach, is often, perceived, as being adversarial, non – cooperative, and polarizing, by much of the rest, of the free world!

Rather than trying to come to some common ground, and a meeting, of the minds, with our historically, closest allies, President Trump, has taken us, in an apparently different direction. What might possibly go wrong with that approach?

Why Trump's Words Matter: 5 Examples

Nearly everyone, whether they support, or oppose, the policies, etc, of President Donald Trump, realize and recognize, we have never witnessed, any previous occupant of the office, who used the rhetoric, he has consistently articulated! While some either agree, or object, to specific words, or the tone of his message, what might be, more significant, etc, is the overall, and specific impacts, of what he says. Fact – checkers state, Mr. Trump, has either lied, or articulated major misstatements, an average of over 5 times, per day, since his election, and, like, the story, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, eventually, even if he's truthful, many won believe him, etc. With this in mind, this article will attempt to briefly. review and consider, 5 examples, of why, the words of a prominent elected official, matter.

1. Within US: Although we have gone over half a century, since major civil rights legislation, was enacted, in the United States, it seems to many, Mr. Trump's reference to Make America Great Again , may be a subliminal message, to appeal to those, who want to go back, to the past, when certain American freedoms, might not have existed. Whether he truly is, or not, many perceive this President, to be either racist, or possess numerous biases and prejudices! Shouldn't the goal and objective, of our President, to bring Americans together, rather than be a polarizing influence?

2. International / foreign perception: The United States has always prided itself, on serving as the moral and ethical example, for the rest of the world! Today, it seems, that's no longer the case, and when I have traveled, internationally, in the past year, citizens of foreign nations, question, what's happened to us. The level of Mr. Trump's rhetoric, vitriol, threats and adversarial style, appear to be hurting the reputation and image of this nation!

3. Have we earned the right to maintain others' respect ?: Being respected by other nations, is an essential consideration, if we hope to create more cooperation, and / or consensus, for the better! This President's negative statements, regarding agreements, such as NAFTA, and the Paris Accords, has indicated, we are willing to defer, from any leadership position, around the world. While no one can be certain, doesn't it seem, when Trump taunts, the President of North Korea, makes contrary statements regarding the Middle East, Iran, Pakistan, etc, things may not turn out, well?

4. Solutions, versus bravado / blaming and complaining: It seems every time, President Trump is, or feels challenged, he resorts to blaming, complaining, or exhibiting bravado ! We need leadership, which focuses on genuine needs, goals and objectives, and expends his energy, towards creating and developing viable solutions!

5. Working with Congress: We are experiencing a level of partisan politics, unlike any, we have witnessed, in recent memories! President Trump, seems, to be unwilling, or unable, to accept, the fact, the American government, is based on Separation of Powers, with the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches, co – equal partners! The tone and vitriol of his rhetoric, seems to polarize, rather than seek quality and focus, in a cooperative manner!

Words matter, especially, when they come out of the mouth, of the President. President Trump's rhetoric and vitriol, may attract his core supporters, but, seems to turn others, off!

Trump – Confusing Signals: 5 Examples

Leading any nation, especially one, as diverse, ethnically, racially, and politically, as the United States, is challenging, under any circumstances, and especially so, in the present political climate! While there are many things, which are different about the way, Donald J. Trump, perceives and conceives of the position, and represents this nation, perhaps the most troubling, to some of us, is how he often articulates confusing signals, on an almost- daily, basis. With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly discuss, and examine, 5 examples, of some of these situations, and how / why, they have the potential of significantly impacting the nation, and our citizens, as well as, way of life.

1. Health reform: When he was a candidate, Mr. Trump often made statements, claiming he would fix what's wrong, and make the system, better, and less expensive! During some of the legislative battles, he stated, it was more complicated than he thought it would be (Isn't that inspiring?). When the House of Representatives passed legislation, he appeared, in celebratory poses, etc, with the leaders of that body. By the next day, however, he was proclaiming, he wanted the Senate, to make it better, and kinder, than the legislation, he applauded, the day before. He often proclaimed, how, he would sign this great change, even though, the legislation, he so loudly applauded, neither was better health care, or less expensive! Trump's use of Twitter, often condemns and blames others, generally resorting to complaining, rather than solutions!

2. Tax legislation: President Trump often proclaimed, his law, would have to help the middle – class, primarily! Although, nearly every economist, stated it would create large deficits, and primarily help the wealthiest 1%, and corporations, Trump bragged about how great, it would be, for America. Doesn't making America, great, again, assume, it isn't great, now?

3. The Wall: One of the core components, of Trump's political campaign, when he was a candidate, was emphasizing the need for a wall, on our Southern border, and stating, Mexico, would pay for it! He now is requesting billions of dollars, for the first installment, of paying for that wall. He continues to emphasize it, although most professionals, state, it is, largely, more symbolic than anything else, and provides little true security! Yet, the facts, often seem, not to matter, to Mr. Trump!

4. DACA / The Dreamers: His predecessor, President Obama, signed an Executive Order, protecting, those referred to as the Dreamers, and this action, known as DACA , was intended to protect approximately 800,000 individuals, who have been in this country for years, and were brought here, before they were 10 years old. First, President Trump, refused to continue this action, by stating it should be legislation, and passing – the – buck, to Congress. Then, he began to blame his political opponents, because they were unwilling to accept, using this as a bargaining chip, to enhance Trump's commitment to the wall!

5. Blaming / complaining: President Trump often blames others, and complains about what they do, rather than focusing on viable solutions! It often seems, he lashes out on anyone, who disagrees with him, and it's always their fault! Individuals he heaps, much praise upon, one day, he, often, turns – on, the next. It's this tendency to throw others under the bus, which sends misleading signals!

Both within this country, as well as internationally, most people seek consistency, from the leader of the free world! In his first year, President Trump. has rarely done so!

Ramifications of Trump's Behavior: 6 Examples

Few objective would would deny, for better of worse, we have never, in recent memory, observed any President, behave, like our present occupant of that office. Donald Trump has spent his public career, in a way, which consistently brought attention, to himself, either by his actions, or rhetoric. Few would deny, he is a master of self – promotion, and while, that, probably, personally benefited him, it is questionable, whether, it will be in the best interest of this country, or many of its citizens. Mr. Trump's behavior, rhetoric, and actions, have certain impacts, and whether intentional, or not, will probably have significant ramifications. Therefore, this article will briefly examine and review, 6 examples, and some possibilities, and / or probabilities.

1. Environmental / climate change: Trump has often articulated a message, which seems to be, he doubts the reality of climate change, and any potential dangers. During this recent, record, cold – spell, his message, focused on calling it warming, seeming to misunderstand, people impact the future. He appointed Scott Pruitt, as Secretary, of the Department of Environmental Protection, who has spent much of his career, fighting previous environmental, protective measures. Loosening up, waste – dumping, promoting development in, previously protected lands, and encouraging energy exploration, in the waters, closest to our nation, puts the future of our nation, in terms of clean air, and water, in doubt!

2. Judicial appointments: Depending on one's political views and appointments, any President's judicial appointments, significantly, affects the future! We need open – minded judges, who are both properly prepared, and truly qualified.

3. Race / ethnic relations: Trump's rhetoric and vitriol, has expanded the ethnic and racial divide, to a level, we have not witnessed, in more than half a century! When the holder of the highest office in our land, seems to articulate a message, contrary, to the concept, of, All men are created equal , does that promote the American dream, etc?

4. Enabling hate groups: The President's message, calling, any, White Supremacists, and Neo – Nazis, Good people , and equating peaceful protestors, to those espousing messages, of hatred and bigotry, has been adopted by many of his core supporters. Doesn't this send the message, which enables haters, to believe, it's good and proper behavior, and feelings?

5. Middle East: The relationships in the Middle East, date many generations and centuries, and developing any type of meeting – of – the – minds, is, at best, extremely challenging. Many Presidents have attempted to assist the process, and only Jimmy Carter, approximately 40 years ago, had any success. Logically, since, at least 4 different religions, claim Jerusalem, as essential, to their religious beliefs and core, does it seem, somewhat obvious. if you hope to create some opportunity for peaceful resolution, you can't begin, in a confrontational manner? Why would any Muslims trust any efforts, from a man, who has consistently used, the vitriol and rhetoric, he has?

6. North Korea: Issues and conflicts, with North Korea, have gone on, as long as, nearly every living American has been alive! However, how can anyone feel safer, more secure, and closer to a peaceful resolution, when Mr. Trump has seemingly taunted, the rather, volatile, North Korean leader, consistently?

Whether you support or oppose him, it's important to realize and recognize, there are ramifications, to his actions, rhetoric, and behavior! These 6, are some of the examples.

Some Real World Examples of How to Ask Someone to Be Your Mentor

Having a mentor is an excellent way to acquire new skills and determine what skills you already possess and to explore your personal strengths and weaknesses. A mentor can share personal experiences. They can be a sounding board for your ideas and give new perspectives to your strategies for achieving goals.

Over the years I've had personal experience with mentoring and I'll draw on that experience to illustrate several approaching to asking someone to be a mentor to you.

The first step is to find someone who has experience doing you what you want to learn about and ask for advice on a particular topic.

A number of years ago I decided to begin investing in commercial real estate. While I had experience in buying and selling single-family investment properties I had no experience in multi-family property investing. A new acquaintance of mine, Mike, owned an apartment building. I knew Mike would be a great mentor for investing in a new asset class of real estate.

Here is the approach I used to ask Mike to become a mentor. This approach works almost every time.

"Mike, you are such an inspiration to me. I have some experience in real estate investing although it is limited to single-family properties. I'm very interested in learning about commercial real estate and would greatly value your expertise in buying and owning apartments buildings.

Would you be willing to guide me by telling me the top 5 things I need to know before I seriously pursue this? "

This approach gave me a great opportunity to start a dialog and to give Mike an idea how much I would appreciate knowing how he became successful and to find out what he would do in similar a situation, how he handled the same challenge I was currently faced with.

By approaching Mike this way, I demonstrated that I was willing to learn and accept feedback and that I had identified goals for my growth. By asking for the top 5 things I also set a limit on the amount of time I was asking of Mike – it may only take him 5 minutes to rattle them off the top of his head. He knows he is not making an open ended time commitment and will be eager to share his knowledge.

This was also a great way to see how well we worked together. Was it enjoyable for both of us? If so, it is highly likely we would both want to continue the professional relationship.

Remember … Ask. Don't hint, or dance around the topic, and don't wait for a mentor to volunteer.

What if you don't have any experience yet?

That's a great question and the good news is, this approach can still work for you.

Here's an example of how you could ask for a mentoring relationship:

"Mike, I'm very interested in learning about commercial real estate and would greatly value your guidance in deciding if real estate investing is right for me.

Would you be willing to spend 15 minutes on the phone with me and tell me what, or who, inspired you to become a real estate investor and your best advice to someone who is just starting out? "

One last word … and, I cannot repeat this enough. Always express gratitude. Even if someone can only give you ten minutes of their time, thank them. You have made a great contact with someone whose expertise you value. Tell them so.

And finally …

It's OK to tell someone you see him or her as a mentor. They will probably be extremely flattered, in fact, they may not think of themselves as mentor material until you plant the seed.
