Success in Norse Astrology – The Role of Tyr

In Norse astrology, Tyr (represented by the planet Saturn) is one of three planets that indicate success or accomplishment in life. The other two planets are Freyr (Jupiter) and Thor (Mars). Tyr represents our sense of law and order, of how society should be structured. He signifies the demands society makes of us, and what we, in return, demand from society. More specifically, he shows the role of business, organizations, law, contracts, and government in our lives. Unlike, the Greco-Roman Saturn, Tyr does not represent limitation or constriction. While Saturn represents isolation, Tyr represents involvement with external organizations, and how they may assist us.

Because Tyr has an affinity with the Day West house of Norse astrology, we also look to that octant of the solar circle for the role of law, business, and other societal organizations in our accomplishments.

Of the Norse natal horoscopes that we discuss here, we see Tyr at his strongest in the charts of two heads of government: Angela Merkel, current Chancellor of Germany, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Governor of California. In Chancellor Merkel's chart, Tyr is in the pleasant and harmonious rune Wunjo, indicating ease when working within large bureaucracies. Tyr is close to the zenith, in the Day house, which indicates success within large organizations. Frigga (Venus), the planet of family, is in the Day West house, making her a mother-figure within Germany. A sextile of Frigga to Tyr emphasizes this identification. Ansuz, rune of magic, wind, and communication, is the primary rune in the Day West house, which gave her the power to gently break through barriers. This rune helped her transcend the barriers of a life in the DDR (East Germany), and made her the first female chancellor of Germany.

The Tyr of Governor Schwarzenegger is more dynamic. Here we find it in Thor's rune, Thurisaz, indicating powerful breakthroughs in business and government. Schwarzenegger, barely speaking English, emigrated from Austria to the USA, creating businesses, becoming an actor, and entering politics. Tyr is in conjunction with Freyja (Sun), making this direction more individualistic and person-oriented. Tyr, however, is in the Night East house of family, which indicates a volatile mix of family and publicity, of domestic vs. public duties. Elhaz, rune of striving toward heaven, is in the Day West house, emphasizing his struggle for the best.

Another interesting placement is that of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. Here we find Tyr in Perthro, the most random and fickle of runes. This is an apt description of her position within the staid hierarchy of the British government and monarchy. Tyr was also in the East house, the house of self, so that she became identified with those very institutions. The feminine planets Frigga and Hel (southern declination of the Moon) emphasize her role as wife and mother in the royal family. Her Day West house contains both powerful Thor and disruptive Loki (Uranus), which encouraged her to willfully upset the establishment. Ansuz in the Day West house helps her artfully evade societal conventions.

An enlightening comparison can be made between actress Elizabeth Taylor and Diana Spencer. Like Spencer, Taylor's Tyr is not only in unpredictable Perthro, but also in the East house, with inspirational Ansuz again in the Day West house. But unlike Spencer's Tyr, Taylor's Tyr forms no aspects to other planets. As such, she never moved in the halls of government as did Spencer. True, Taylor married into politics (Senator John Warner), but she never took advantage of this position.

The Ironman Approach to Success

I went to my first-ever triathlon a month ago, the Big Kahuna, in Santa Cruz, CA.  I bet you’re wondering how I did?  Actually, I went as a spectator.  Friends and I went to support Jim Atkinson — a 40 year old man who had just started triathlons 2 years ago.  Little did I know he would be the amateur winner of the entire event — all ages!  Amazing!

How did Jim go from a newbie in this sport to beating nearly 650 other people?  His mom described Jim 2 years ago as someone who sat around, drank beer, and looked like a “little buddha” with his belly.  Need I say, no sign of that beer belly today!

In the Big Kahuna (a ½ Ironman), participants first had to swim 1.2 miles (in the cold ocean), followed by a 56-mile bike ride (with hills), and finish by running 13.1 miles.  Did I mention the last part of the run was on the beach?  Have you ever tried running in sand after you’re totally exhausted?

So, what’s his secret?  From what I observed, Jim’s winning methods are the same secrets that make for great leaders in fast-paced, competitive industries.

My “Top 5” Observations

1. Preparation. The day before the race, Jim went to the event location and familiarized himself with the routes, found the transition points, and practiced going through the transitions.  Being better prepared is something that I work on with mid-level managers.  They want to minimize surprises and handle those that come their way with finesse.  Thinking, planning, and acting “ahead of time” allows for a smoother event.

2. Competitive Mindset.  Jim pushes himself.  As an example, he told me that if he heard footsteps behind him, he would keep his rule of “never look back.”  Instead, he pushed himself faster, because he didn’t want the upcoming person to pass him.  Competition in business too breeds confidence, high quality, and urgency.

3. Practice-Adjustment-Practice.  In triathlons and in a leadership positions, there are new skills to learn.  AND to master!  You may first need to learn the front crawl swim stroke.  With repetitive practice and fine-tuning you’ll improve and start to beat your own time.  Likewise, an important skill in business is an ability to communicate a clear and compelling message to your company.  So, practicing clear messages in a variety of ways will move you to mastery.  Practice, adjustment, and practice are essential.

4. Health.  To be a top athlete in any sport, you must fuel your body wisely.  Jim not only selected nutritious foods, he also paid attention to the timing of meals, mix of nutrition, and his body’s response.  Without a proper diet for your sport and body, you will not perform at your best.  Likewise, as a leader if you are under a lot of stress, then you will not make the best decisions.  You may start to “self-medicate” by adding more caffeine and sugar, and then it’s a downward spiral towards loss of focus, irritability, or unhealthy energy.

5. Embrace the Role.  Jim’s attitude was that he’s an “athlete.”  He had ownership and a “can do” attitude.  He could have taken the mindset of “just for fun” or “another participant.”  Your attitude makes a difference, because it feeds into your level of commitment to the sport, the project, your team, your family, your job.  Be “IN” the role.  Embrace early on what you want to be, the new or next role, and you’ll succeed faster.

Even selecting just one of these 5 to focus on can dramatically change your life!  Best of luck to Jim in his quest to participate in Kona Ironman Championships, AND best of luck to you as you apply these ‘triathlon secrets’ to your various leadership roles in life!

Success Acronym

What is Success? Am I successful? At times, we may ask ourselves this illusive question and it leads us to nowhere. In the eyes of your friends and relatives, you may be successful in term of wealth, status and recognition, but deep inside you, you may feel the emptiness that you have despite all the criteria that many people term as successful yardstick.

If you asked one thousand person about what is success, you will get a thousand different answers. So what other people think as success is not that important as far as you yourself are concerned, the important thing is you must personal feel successful regardless of what others think or feel. I once read a book with the title “Psycho-cybernetic” by Maxwell Maltz who write about some criteria of success which I personally feel is what individual should look at success.

In his book, he penned his acronym for success as

S-Sense of direction

U-Understanding

C-Courage

C-Charity

E-Esteem

S-Self confidence

S-Self acceptance

When you look at what Maxwell had shared on the acronym of success, you will notice that the criteria he shared is all from within rather that outside; it is more of our personal character building than material possession. If one would understand that the possession of the wealth of the whole world would not make a person more successful than a person who had the courage and self-confidence with a sense of direction in bringing charity and spend all her life in helping and building the self-esteem and self-acceptance of the needy and the poor, one would realized that success is not about material possession but more of self actualization and leaving a legacy for the world.

Most people strongly believe that to be successful, they must have the material possession or personal status such as wealth, fame and power that the world at large look upon to. In recent years, there is a call and drive for those super wealthy personality to donate their wealth for charity and philanthropy work for the benefits of our next generation. What has made some of these super riches to have a change of heart to parted the material possession that they spend all their life to achieve and accumulate? We might not be a noble as Mother Theresa and all these philanthropists but we too can follow the criteria of success shared by Maxwell Maltz and leave a legacy for our children to remember.

Sweet Smell Of Success

It might be stretching it a little to say that we've lured you here under false false pretences, but it should be noted that, unlike the other five films in the festival line-up, the jazz themes that run through tonight's offering Sweet Smell of Success (1957) are tangential, rather than central, to the finished movie. The film, however, does feature actual footage of the Chico Hamilton Quintet on stage and it even spawned a couple of soundtrack albums, which saw the Quintet sharing a recording credit with the Oscar-winning composer Elmer Bernstein. In addition, the film's downbeat plot revolves around the forbidden romance of a damaged New York socialite with an up and coming jazz guitarist. In an attempt, therefore, to broaden out the reach of the festival beyond the Jazz biopic and the Jazz documentary, festival curator Dan Thomas has generously created a space in the program tonight for this classic film noir.

The excellent reputation that a Sweet Smell of Success enjoys today is largely due to its fluid, street-smart camera work, courtesy of acclaimed cinematographer James Wong Howe, and its razor-sharp screenplay (voted the 34th best of all time by the Writers Guild of America, nonetheless!). Adapted by Ernest Lehman (from his own novella) and then heavily re-written by the celebrated playwright Clifford Odets, the visceral, distinctively stylized script, in which each scene is trip-wired with explosive dialogue, drew unforgetable performances from Tony Curtis as the sycophantic 'two-time loser' Sidney Falco, and Burt Lancaster as the merciless demagogue JJHunsecker. Set slap-bang in the heart of Broadway, this, the most hard-boiled of New York movies, in which you can almost smell theraft and the double-cross rising up off the sidewalk, was in fact the stateside debut of Scottish director Alexander Mackendrick, best known for his quintessential Ealing comedies Whiskey Galore (1949), The Man in the White Suit (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955).

The central character of Hunsecker was based on the all-powerful gossip columnist Walter Winchell, a vindictive control freak who ran a nice little sideline blackmailing personal enemies and political opponents by threatening to smear them in his mass-circulation showbiz columns and radio broadcasts. A friend and ally of FBI Chief J.Edgar Hoover and the red-baiting Senator Joe McCarthy, Winchell used the burgeoning power of celebrity to destroy the practitioners of those who did not conform to his idea of an all-American patriot. For the left-leaning Lancaster and the radical firebrand Odets, (fatally damaged by his "co-operation" with McCarthy's House of Un-American Activities Committee), Sweet Smell of Success was payback time for those "comrades" banished from Hollywood during the blacklist years, and they were in no mood to pull their punches either; the muckraking Hunsecker emerges from this acid-tongued, screwball tragedy as a cold fish with a cruel streak as wide as the Brooklyn Bridge.

Although the film has become critically revered over time, Sweet Smell of Success took a bath at the box office, losing Lancaster's production company HHL the best part of $ 2 million. Mackendrick had seen the writing on the wall at the film's San Francisco preview, noting that Curtis's young army of fans, used to seeing their idol in a more sympathetic light, were 'not only going to dislike it, they were going to resent it' . Interestingly, the tenth largest grossing movie of '57 was Jailhouse Rock, which raises the possibility that if Sweet Smell of Success had been made just a year or so later, the character of jazz guitarist Steve Dallas might well have ended up on the cutting room floor, upstaged by a new cultural bogeyman in the shape of a hip-swivelling hillbilly from Tupelo, Mississippi.

Watching Mackendrick's movie today, it's impossible to witness Lancaster's chilling portrait of the malodorous Hunsecker – an authoritarian, megalomaniacal media celebrity casually luxurating in the power he has to make or break a career – without reflecting on the disturbing fact that sixty years later his populist heir handsome Donald Trump is about to take possession of America's nuclear codes. A particularly nightmarish thought and complete in step with one of the most pessimistic movies about the human condition ever to make it out of Hollywood's dream factory.

Success in Life – A Day with Chris Gardner

It was a cold afternoon in Atlanta Georgia but insider the speakers auditorium of the Georgia State University (GSU) the energy level was high and the room was pulsating with positive vibrations as the author of the memoir that inspired the major motion picture, The Pursuit of Happyness, took the stage to inspire the group of young people eagerly looking forward to success in life.

Chris Gardner’s story is the “quintessential rags-to-riches American Dream story” as claimed by no less an authority than the San Francisco Chronicle. Deserted by his wife and left to take care of his son through joblessness and a year on the streets homeless – including many nights spent in a public restroom — he never gave up hope that he would one day make it big or renege on his promise to always be there for his child.

As is always the case for those who hold on to faith through persistence, his dreams became a reality when he made it to the boardroom in wall street; a millionaire whose story is best told by his memoir The Pursuit of Happyness and the number one box office title bearing the same name that starred Will Smith as Chris Gardner and his son Jaden as Gardner’s Son.

To the hundreds of students that filled the speaker’s auditorium at GSU Gardner’s message was simple: I broke a cycle! In addition to the millions of dollars he made against the odds, he said that his main achievement was the fact that in a generation that has seen kids being raised by female single parents, he has been there for his child to raise him up as a good and responsible son who is expected to do the same for his own children. And further more Gardner relishes the fact that his inspirational story lives on in distant lands inspiring millions of people.

He told the story of an Iranian woman who sent him an email telling him that she was lucky to read his book by paying a driver to smuggle the book for her (from Jordan) into Iran. And then Gardner paused to let the audience appreciate some of the benefits of living in American where we all take many basic freedoms for granted like being able to have access to any book of one’s choice.

I consider myself the luckiest among the group of students who came to have a glimpse of Gardner. I had him autograph my copy of his book but I would not stop there. Having given him a copy of my memoir Homegrown: The Student Experience of a Unique Canada-Africa University Program I also gave him another copy to autograph for me, telling him “this is my own pursuit of happiness”. But that opportunity was not to be the only one to satisfy the fastidious student in me. Indeed I was in a lift going back to the lobby of the GSU Student Center where Gardner sat patiently waiting to autograph books for a long line of students. I wanted to go back and just stand at a distance looking at Chris Gardner to fill my mind with the image of a real success story.

Lo and behold my elevator was to stop on the second floor only to see Chris Gardner come in with an escort. I rushed to sake hands with him thanking him for sharing his inspirational story. And of course I reminded him again that I had given him a copy of my two books (so he would not forget them). Stepping out of the elevator Gardner turned around and looked me in the face, looking pretty much like a father addressing his son: hey, remember this, there is nothing I can do that you cannot do. If I can do it, you can do it too!

Now if you think the odds are against you. If you think you do not have a chance to achieve success in life, just read (or watch) The Pursuit of Happyness. Your day with Chris Gardner may be the one most remarkable turning point in your life. Chris Gardner’s life story is truly inspiring. Billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump calls it “a tremendous lesson in tenacity”!
