Colombia’s President Ivan Duque Marquez called for a “diplomatic siege” to isolate the Venezuelan government, in a speech at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. on Friday.

“We find ourselves having to continue telling the world about the urgency of having a diplomatic siege to isolate this usurpation and this dictatorship,” said Duque.

Duque also congratulated the OAS for “rising to the occasion” and recognising Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president of Venezuela. Guaido proclaimed himself the interim leader on January 23, sparking a political crisis in the country.
